Clogged drains in Black Mountain

Black Mountain has older houses close to downtown, newer homes in the hills around it, and a large number of vacation rentals and second homes. Census estimates put about one in four homes here at more than 60 years old, and those are the houses where we find the hardest clogs.

Their drains are often cast iron, and the sewer line to the street is often clay. Cast iron roughens inside as it ages and catches debris. Clay joints loosen and let tree roots in. In newer homes with PVC drains, a clog is almost always something that went down the drain: grease, hair, wipes, or too much paper.

Vacation rentals and second homes

A rental that sits empty during the week and fills up on the weekend is hard on drains. Guests flush wipes and paper products, pour grease down the kitchen sink, and run every shower at once. Problems tend to show up on a full booking.

We clear drains between bookings, and we can check the main line with a camera before your busy season, so a slow line doesn't become a backup with guests in the house. If you manage a rental, tell us the next check-in date when you call and we will schedule around it.

A sewer smell in a house that has been empty for weeks is often a dry trap, not a clog. Running water in every fixture for a minute refills the traps and usually clears the smell.

How we clear the line

We ask which fixtures are affected, test the drains, and find where the blockage is before we start. A single sink or tub is cleared with a small cable machine. A main line is cleared with a sectional machine, and heavy grease or sludge is washed out with hydro-jetting.

When a clog has come back, or the house has older pipe, we run a camera through the line and show you what is in it. If the pipe is sound, the job is done. If roots or a broken section are the cause, we explain the repair options and the price for each.

Sewer and septic in Black Mountain

Homes in town connect to the Metropolitan Sewerage District of Buncombe County (MSD). MSD maintains the sewer mains. The service line that runs from your house to the main is the owner's to maintain, and that is where most root and pipe problems turn up.

Some homes outside of town are on septic systems. We clear clogged drain lines in those homes the same way, but we do not pump or repair septic tanks. If every drain in the house is slow and the tank has not been pumped in several years, have the tank checked first.
