Sewer line problems
The sewer line carries all of the wastewater from your house to the sewer main. When it fails, every drain in the house is affected. The most common causes we see around Asheville are tree roots entering through pipe joints, older clay and cast-iron pipe that has cracked or corroded, and sections that have settled and sag, which lets waste collect and clog the line.
Many homes in Asheville's older neighborhoods still have their original sewer lines. Clay pipe joints loosen over time, and roots find the gaps. Cast iron rusts from the inside until it cracks or collapses.
Camera inspection first
Before we recommend a repair, we run a camera through the line. The footage shows where the damage is, how extensive it is, and how deep the pipe runs. We review it with you so you can see the problem for yourself.
A camera inspection is also worth doing when you are buying a home. If your inspector recommended a sewer scope, we can inspect the line and give you a clear picture of its condition before closing.
Repair or replacement
If the damage is limited to one section, a spot repair is often enough. If the line is collapsed, badly out of grade, or failing in several places, full replacement is the better long-term fix. We won't recommend replacing a line that can be repaired, and we won't recommend repeated cleanings for a line that has failed.
Before we dig, we have underground utilities marked. New sewer pipe is bedded in gravel at the correct slope, and we inspect the finished line with the camera before backfilling. We coordinate the required permits and inspections.
Water line repair and replacement
The water service line brings water from the meter or well to your house. Older lines made of galvanized steel or early plastic such as polybutylene can corrode, crack, or leak underground. Common signs are low water pressure, wet spots in the yard, and a water bill that climbs for no clear reason.
We repair and replace water service lines, run new lines for new construction and additions, and pressure-test every new line before it is buried.
Glad to have Marcel and his crew install a new supply line from the main to the house.
