Gas piping for homes and businesses
We run new gas lines from the meter to the appliance, extend existing lines to new appliances, and replace piping that is corroded, damaged, or too small for the load. Common jobs include lines for gas ranges, dryers, water heaters, outdoor grills, and standby generators, as well as commercial kitchen equipment.
MRJ Plumbing holds an unlimited plumbing license in North Carolina, which covers gas piping. We handle the required permits and inspections.
Sizing the line correctly
A gas line has to be sized for the total demand of every appliance it serves. This matters most with tankless water heaters, which can need far more gas than the tank they replace. An undersized line causes weak burner performance, error codes, and lukewarm water. We calculate the load from each appliance's BTU rating and the length of the run, then size the pipe to match.
How we install and test
We use black iron pipe or corrugated stainless steel tubing (CSST), depending on the location and the run. Joints are sealed with gas-rated sealant, pipe is supported at code-required intervals, CSST is bonded as code requires, and each appliance gets an accessible shutoff valve.
Before a new line goes into service, we pressure-test the system and confirm it holds, check every joint for leaks, and verify that each appliance lights and burns properly.
If you smell gas
Leave the building right away and call 911 or your gas provider from outside. For most natural gas customers in the area, that is Enbridge Gas North Carolina. Don't switch lights or appliances on or off on your way out. Once the utility has made the area safe, we can repair or replace the damaged piping.
