Pipe repair
A single leak, a damaged fitting, or a section of pipe that froze and split can usually be repaired without replacing more of the system. We find the source, make the repair, and check the surrounding pipe for signs of wider problems.
If the rest of the system is showing its age, with corrosion in several places or repeated leaks, we will tell you. You can repair the immediate problem now and plan a repipe for later.
When a repipe makes sense
Many older Asheville homes still have galvanized steel supply lines. Galvanized pipe corrodes from the inside, which narrows the pipe, lowers water pressure, and eventually causes leaks. Homes built from the late 1970s to the mid-1990s may have polybutylene supply lines, which are prone to sudden failure. Cast-iron drain lines rust and crack with age.
Once pipe like this starts failing in several places, repairs become frequent and expensive. Replacing the system at once usually costs less over time and prevents water damage.
Materials we use
For water supply lines, we install PEX or copper. PEX is flexible, handles freezing better than rigid pipe, and needs fewer fittings. Copper is durable and the better fit in some installations. For drain lines, we replace cast iron with PVC. We explain the trade-offs for your home before work begins.
What to expect during a repipe
We plan the pipe routes to keep wall and ceiling openings to a minimum and tell you up front where they will be. We keep your water off for as little time as possible, and we pressure-test the new system before the walls are closed.
A repipe pairs well with other projects. If you are replacing a water heater or remodeling a kitchen or bathroom, that is the most efficient time to replace aging supply lines.
Apartment and multi-unit repiping
We also repipe apartment complexes and multi-unit buildings. We work unit by unit, coordinate the schedule with the property manager, and keep each unit's downtime as short as possible.
MRJ Plumbing truly saved my day when my pipes burst after the big winter snow storm. They showed up like a knight in shining armor — quick, courteous, and they explained everything. You can tell they care about people, not just the job.
